Identifying hazards and improving safety at Moench Hall
The arc-flash and coordination study involved a detailed analysis aimed at identifying potential hazards in the electrical distribution system of Moench Hall. The study led to the production of 179 arc-flash labels. These labels were affixed on various electrical distribution components including switchboards, panelboards, transfer switches, and safety switches that serve major equipment. The labels provided critical information on the energy levels and safety measures necessary for each component, thereby ensuring the safety of personnel during maintenance and operational activities.
In support of this study, R.E. Dimond and Associates conducted a comprehensive field survey of the electrical distribution components. The field survey primarily focused on those components that could be observed without the necessity of removing electrical enclosure covers. This approach was adopted to ensure the safety of the surveyors by avoiding direct exposure to energized conductors.
Whenever there was a need to access information that required direct interaction with energized conductors or components concealed behind enclosure covers, Rose Hulman Institute of Technology engaged the services of a qualified electrician. This measure ensured that all data collection and interactions with the electrical system were conducted under stringent safety standards, thereby avoiding unnecessary risks.
The arc-flash and coordination study for Moench Hall aimed at enhancing the operational integrity and safety of the electrical distribution system. Through careful analysis and strategic implementation of safety labels, this project significantly contributed to the prevention of electrical accidents and ensured compliance with relevant safety standards.
